Cinder Blocks
As I mentioned before, the general public frequently thinks of cinder blocks when they think of a retaining wall. But there are many other options besides the standard cinder block.
Product such as basalite 12 inch and 16 inch blocks are great for building small garden walls. These manufactured blocks can be stacked by an enthusiastic do it yourself kind of person when they are only a few feet high. When the walls get over 5 feet tall it takes a bit of engineering to ensure that the soil stays firm and the wall does't shift and eventually fall.
A measure of foundation depth in the ground is we dig one eighth of the total hide of the wall into the ground. This give us a sturdy base for the rest of the wall. Another good tip is to slope the blocks backwards towards the hill they are supporting to make sure they do not fall forward over time. Allowing for proper drainage is a key piece of building a cinder block retaining wall. Placing some form of rock aggregate behind the wall will allow water to pass through to the drain pipe and avoid erosion.
